Have a safer Fourth of July in 2025

All over Long Island, residents and visitors alike will soon be celebrating the 249th birthday of our great United States of America. Here on Long Island, there are plenty of activities for families and individuals to attend.

Regardless of whether your Fourth of July plans include traveling or staying closer to home, here are a few tips to help you stay safer in crowds.

Plan your exit strategy upon arrival

You want to be able to count on event organizers to provide security and safety and large outdoor gatherings. But countless incidents at large events have shown that event organizers cannot always anticipate every danger facing attendees. Make sure that your group establishes a place to meet if separated and that everyone knows where the car is parked.

Take a photo of the group before arriving

Parents of children who wound up missing often struggle to recall what their children were wearing at the time. Snapping a shot of the group is a good way to commemorate the event and provide an accurate description of any members who can’t be found.

Observe the exits when entering

As you enter an event, make a note of any exits and point them out to the group. Also, pay attention to any uniforms worn by security guards or law enforcement so that anyone who may need their assistance can readily identify them.

If you get injured at an event

New York premises liability laws dictate that event organizers and property owners bear liability for their guests’ safety while attending their events, whether paid or free. If you suffered injuries due to lax security or other liability issues, you may be able to recover compensation for your injuries, damages and other losses.
